MARITA'S
VINEYARD
The History...
At 16, Bulmaro Montes moved to California from Oaxaca, Mexico, for the American dream. Intrigued by vines, he joined Joseph Phelps, starting his legacy in 1973. By 1978, he managed Joseph Phelps Vineyards, later becoming the VP of Operations. He displayed dedication to wines like Insignia, Backus, and Cabernet Sauvignon. After
retiring in June 2003, he founded Marita’s Vineyard and SOMA boutique wines. These wines surpass his existing accomplishments. With his knowledge, passion, and
dedication, Bulmaro continues to thrive in the industry.

Terroir: The unique vineyard setting is a hillside slope with well-drained rocky, stone, and gravel soil. The vines' root depth is shallow, averaging 24 to 36 inches, which has a
major impact on fruit quality by concentrating the fruit flavors. The property is 2.6 acres (5,000 vines), planted in 2002
SOMA Limited Private Reserve
SOMA Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is named after Bulmaro’s two daughters, Sophia and Mara. Originally, this label was not in Bulmaro’s plan. However, Sophia and Mara convinced their father not to dump out his first harvest in 2004 and 75 cases of SOMA was then bottled. SOMA is a combination of Block 1 and 2 from this 2.6-acre vineyard, demonstrating the care and passion behind the winegrower’s dedication to each vine and the love for his daughters.
